Cranbrook 18 Vigo 19 - 01st March 2014
Updated by: Admin - 09/03/2014
As the score suggests, a close game with Vigo using their heavier pack to good effect with Cranes denied enough clean ball to fully utilize their gifted back line.
On 8 minutes the visiting left wing collected a nothing ball on the halfway line. However he then jinked past three missed tackles to score between the posts. An easy conversion, 0 - 7. Cranes stung into action drove Vigo back to their 5m line. A series of forward thrusts sucked the defenders in leaving a three man overlap out left. A couple of looped passes gave winger Chris Tomlin plenty of room to touch down. No conversion, 5 - 7.
More pressure from the lighter home pack was rewarded with a penalty on the Vigo 22 (illegal handling) which Chris Catt slotted,
8 - 7. With half time approaching Vigo clicked into a purple patch, driving into the tackle and recycling with gusto. From Cranes 22 a quick heal, slick passing to the right wing who dived over to score. No conversion, 8 - 12.
The second period was largely Cranes on the attack with Vigo defending strongly. Skipper Alex Cornwallis stepped through two tackles before off loading to hooker Kenny Magsico to crash over in the left corner, 13 - 12. A yellow card for novice prop Dave Lock gave the Vigo pack the advantage they were striving for, gratefully accepted with a touch down under the posts. An easy conversion, 13 - 19.
The final 15 minutes were all Cranbrook and although Sam Depoel-Wood got over the line, the conversion failed, 18 - 19. Vigo's defense over the last 10 minutes was brave and effective. Cranes will kick themselves for losing this one.
Match report by Mike McMinnies
Thanks goes to the Sponsors and Volunteers who attended the lunch, which is quite separate to the 4 Club Lunches we have every season. The opposition
match report seems to think this was representative of some Greek Mythological event but it was just a way of saying thank you to those people and companies who make a difference to Cranbrook RFC. As for the alleged agitated vocal lynch mob portrayed in the aforementioned opposition match report on the sidelines, I think that applied to both sides of the pitch, certainly from the ones in the glass house......
